Say what now?

This is old, but it’s really funny, and I have a thing for Bobby Kennedy conspiracy theories. I’ve heard the one about the mind-control conspiracy (which is in Sirhan’s parole hearing strategy, among other places). I’ve heard about the guy holding his arm who said he couldn’t have shot Kennedy, and the bullet count theory, which claim a second gunman (neither adds up). But I’ve never heard this delightful piece of buffoonery from Rush Limbaugh shortly after the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Giffords:

Mr. Kennedy, your uncle was shot by a communist, Lee Harvey Oswold. Your other uncle, Robert Kennedy, was shot by a militant Islamist, Sirhan Sirhan. In neither case, were your uncle’s assassins related to Sarah Palin in any way.

He’s responding to a fairly moderate comment by Patrick Kennedy connecting over-blown right-wing rhetoric to the shooting as, effectively, a priming factor; creating an atmosphere of excuse and cover. So Limbaugh inevitably goes back to the Kennedy brothers. Was Oswald a communist? Maybe. He was certainly bewildered. But claiming Sirhan Sirhan was an Islamist?

Yeah, ok, he was of Palestinian extraction. Sure, but he was a Christian. Like many other Palestinians, Lebanese and Egyptians, the Sirhan family were Christians, descened from Christians; in the US, Sirhan was first a Baptist, then a 7th Day Adventist. His contemporary explanation for the assassination was to do with Kennedy’s support for Israel, yes, but that’s because he was Palestinian. He wasn’t a Muslim, let alone an Islamist.

Why, oh why, can’t we have a better press corps?
